Cancun Diving December Over Christmas and New Year

There is a particular kind of joy in swapping a grey, freezing December at home for a boat deck in the Caribbean sun. While friends are scraping ice off windscreens, you could be dropping onto a warm Cancun reef in nothing more than a thin wetsuit. December is one of our favorite months of the year to dive, and the stretch around Christmas and New Year has a festive, celebratory feel all of its own. Here is what diving in Cancun over the holidays is really like, and how to make the most of it.

Why Cancun Diving December is one of our favorite months
December sits right at the start of our prime season. The summer humidity has eased, the light is bright and clear, and the sea off the Hotel Zone is settling into the calm, reliable conditions that make winter the best time to dive Cancun. It is a wonderful time to be underwater here: comfortable water, good visibility and reefs that are lively with life. For anyone escaping a northern winter, it feels close to magic.

What the water and weather are like at Christmas
Expect warm, welcoming water and mostly sunny, settled days. The Caribbean in December is comfortably warm for diving, and a light wetsuit is plenty for most people, though divers who feel the cold sometimes prefer a touch more. Air temperatures are pleasant rather than scorching, which makes the surface intervals and boat rides genuinely lovely. Every so often a winter front brings a breezy day or two, but the season overall is one of the most dependable we get.

Diving on the actual holidays
Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and the days around them are popular, and for good reason: there is something special about spending the morning of the twenty-fifth on a reef and the afternoon with family. Because so many people have the same idea, holiday dates fill up faster than any other time of year. If your heart is set on diving on a specific day over the break, the golden rule is simple: book early. Spots are genuinely limited, and we would hate for you to miss the date you wanted.

A dive course as a Christmas gift
If you are shopping for someone who loves the ocean, few gifts land quite like the sea itself. A PADI course or a taste of scuba is an experience they will remember long after the wrapping paper is gone, and plenty of couples and families choose to get certified together in Cancun as their holiday adventure. A gift certificate towards a course or a dive trip is easy to arrange and always welcome.

A holiday for the whole family
The holidays are often about being together, and diving in Cancun makes room for everyone. Certified divers can be out on the reef while less-experienced family members join a snorkeling trip over the same shallow, colorful sites, and complete beginners can try scuba for the first time in calm, guided conditions. Nobody has to sit on the beach wishing they had come along.

Booking Christmas and New Year
The one thing worth repeating is to plan ahead. The week between Christmas and New Year is our busiest of the winter, and the best dates go first. Tell us what you are hoping for and how many of you there are, and we will build the holiday around it. Message the team or browse our courses to lock in your dates before they fill.
The December bonus: the bull sharks arrive
There is one more reason December belongs on a diver's calendar, and it swims. From roughly November to March, the big bull sharks gather on the sandy bottom just off this coast, and December sits right at the start of their peak. It is a certified-diver experience run under a proper briefing, and it turns a warm-weather holiday into a genuine bucket-list trip. We wrote a full, honest guide to Cancun's winter bull sharks if you want to know exactly what that dive is like.
