Rather than jumping straight onto a regular tour feeling rusty, you spend time with a PADI instructor who runs you through the key skills and safety points at an easy pace, then you put them straight to use on two relaxed reef dives in calm, clear water.

Scuba diving MUSA, the Cancun Underwater Museum (Museo Subacuático de Arte), is the most iconic dive in the Mexican Caribbean, and our 2-tank MUSA and Reef trip does it properly.

Your first dive drops onto the museum itself, where more than 500 life-size sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor rest in shallow, sunlit water at around 30 feet, slowly transformed into a living artificial reef.

You glide between the figures as angelfish, parrotfish, and the occasional turtle move through them. The second tank takes you to one of Cancun's natural coral reefs, drifting easily over colorful corals, tropical fish, and rays.

Cenote diving is unlike anything else in the world, and our 2-tank cenote trip from Cancun takes you into the freshwater caverns of the Yucatán, the flooded limestone caves the ancient Maya called the underworld.

Check in at 8:30 am and drive south to two of the region's best cenotes, chosen with your guide on the day, sites such as Hells Bells, Kin Ha, or Siete Bocas.

Underwater you drift through crystal-clear freshwater with visibility beyond 100 feet, past ancient stalactites and stalagmites while cathedral shafts of light pour through the openings above.

This is cavern diving within the natural light zone, so no cave certification is needed, just a PADI Open Water certification. It is also perfect for mixed groups: non-divers can snorkel the same cenote alongside you.

Just south of Cancun, Puerto Morelos diving offers some of the calmest, healthiest reef in the Mexican Caribbean, on a protected stretch of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef inside a National Marine Park.

Because it is a protected park, the coral gardens here stay vibrant and uncrowded, and the diving feels like stepping back in time.

On this relaxed two-tank trip, certified divers explore easy reef at 30 to 60 feet (10 to 18 meters), drifting over hard and soft corals as turtles, moray eels, stingrays, and countless reef fish go about their day.

Visibility is often over 80 feet with minimal current.

The easy depth and gentle conditions make Puerto Morelos an ideal reef dive for newer certified divers or anyone wanting a longer, stress-free bottom time.

Night diving reveals a completely different reef, and our single-tank Puerto Morelos night dive is the most memorable evening of a Cancun dive trip.

Check in at 5:30 pm and drive down to the calm, protected reef at Puerto Morelos, with time first at our own beachfront restaurant to watch the sun go down over the water.

Once it is dark you drop in under torchlight and the reef comes alive with the night shift: octopus out hunting, lobster and crabs on the move, sleeping parrotfish, and predators on the prowl.

Day one is the C-58 off Cancun, a WWII minesweeper resting around 80 feet and covered in coral and sponges, drawing barracuda, jacks, snappers, and passing eagle rays, with easy open penetrations.

Day two heads to Puerto Morelos for the Juan Escutia, a large ship in about 90 feet of water with a very different profile and abundant marine life.
