Seaweed in Cancun: Does Sargassum Really Ruin Diving and Snorkeling?

If you have searched seaweed in Cancun and found photos of brown mats piled on the sand, you are not alone, and you are probably a little worried about the trip you booked. Here is the honest answer from a team that is in this water every single day: sargassum looks far worse from the beach than it ever does on a dive. Almost everything you have read is written about the sand. This is written about the water.


The honest answer for divers and snorkelers

Sargassum is a floating seaweed. Out at sea it drifts in loose golden mats, often quite small ones, and here is the part the beach photos never show: in the open water it does not smell, and it very rarely irritates your skin if you brush past it. The smell everyone complains about only starts once it washes ashore, piles up and begins to rot in the sun.

For diving and snorkeling that matters, because almost everything we do happens away from the beach. Our reef sites sit offshore and a few metres down, under the surface layer. The cenotes are inland freshwater caves, so they never see a single strand of sargassum. MUSA and the Manchones reef are boat sites you drop straight down onto. So even in a heavy sargassum week, the dives themselves are usually clear, blue and completely normal. The mats you might motor past on the way out are a view, not a problem.


Meet the fish that lives inside the seaweed

Before you write sargassum off as a nuisance, look closer, because a whole miniature world lives inside those mats. The star of it is the Sargassum fish, a tiny frogfish called Histrio histrio, and it is one of the strangest animals in the Caribbean. It is camouflaged so perfectly, all frills and blotches in seaweed colours, that it is nearly impossible to spot. It barely swims. Instead it crawls through the weed on fins shaped almost like little hands, stalking prey, and it can swallow an animal as big as itself.

We have spotted them on snorkeling trips, and one of the best moments to look is during the safety stop, hanging just under the surface while the boat comes to collect you. Look into a passing clump of sargassum and you never know what is hiding in it. Finding one is a genuine reward you only get if you are actually in the water.


Why it is here: the great Atlantic loop

Sargassum has always existed, but the huge amounts we see now are new. Until about 2011 this was not a yearly event. Then a band of seaweed now called the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt appeared, and in a big year it stretches more than five thousand miles across the ocean.

It exists because a whole chain of things line up, and the seaweed on your beach is really the end of a very long journey. Nutrients pour into the Atlantic from the Amazon, and even the Mississippi, carried by flooding and by fertiliser washing off farmland. Dust blows off the Sahara and drops iron into the sea. The water is warm. And the ocean currents turn the whole system in a slow loop between West Africa and the Caribbean. Take away any one ingredient and the belt shrinks. Line them all up and it makes the big circle right back to our coast. It is, in a strange way, a story about the whole planet arriving on one beach.


The twist: feared lost in the 1970s, overwhelming us now

Here is the part almost nobody tells you. Back in the 1970s scientists were worried about the opposite problem. When researchers first surveyed the Sargasso Sea, the seaweed's original home far to the north, they were alarmed. Ocean currents had turned it into the world's first recognised ocean garbage patch, and in places they reported floating plastic and tar actually outnumbering the sargassum itself. Worse, they found the seaweed was soaking up industrial pollutants like PCBs and heavy metals, and feared the poisons would wreck the tiny ecosystems living in the mats and the nurseries that baby eels and sea turtles depend on.

Those fears were not imaginary. When scientists later compared modern mats to their 1970s samples, they found a real drop in life, with more than a dozen specialised creatures, strange worms, crabs and sea spiders, largely gone. And the irony now is almost unbelievable: the original northern Sargasso Sea is thinning, hit by marine heatwaves, while the new southern belt explodes on fertiliser runoff. In one lifetime we have gone from fearing sargassum would be wiped out to drowning in it. Too little where it belongs, too much where it does not.


The arsenic sponge: why we cannot just use it up

That sponge-like quality from the 1970s story is also why sargassum is such a headache to get rid of. It naturally absorbs arsenic and heavy metals straight out of the seawater, and it is very good at it. That sounds almost helpful until you try to use the stuff. Turn sargassum into compost or fertiliser and the arsenic travels out of the soil and into the vegetables grown in it. That is the real reason it cannot simply be spread on a field or fed to anything. The metals do not vanish, they end up concentrated in the weed on the sand, which is exactly why disposing of it properly is such a genuine and expensive problem.


Where the beaches stay clean: Puerto Morelos

If a clean beach matters to your trip, point yourself at Puerto Morelos, the fishing village about half an hour south of the Cancun hotel zone. It has the best natural defence on this coast. The Mesoamerican reef runs close and shallow here, cresting near the surface roughly a kilometre offshore, so it works like a living breakwater. On top of that there is a floating man-made barrier set inshore to catch whatever gets past. Between the two, Puerto Morelos beaches stay far cleaner than the open hotel-zone sand most of the time. It is not magic, a strong current can still push some in, but it is one of the safest bets on the coast, and it happens to be a calm, beautiful place to dive and snorkel anyway.


What a high-sargassum day actually looks like with us

Because we run from boats to offshore reefs and inland to the cenotes, a heavy sargassum week rarely changes your day much. If a shallow site has a lot of surface weed we simply choose a clearer one, and the cenotes are always there as a completely sargassum-free option: freshwater, crystal clear and impossible for the seaweed to reach. On the beaches themselves the local authorities run a serious daily cleanup, hauling tonnes of it away to keep the tourist stretches usable. So by all means check the forecast, but do not cancel a dive trip over it.


So when is it worst?

The rough answer is late spring through summer, roughly May to August, but it genuinely varies from year to year and even week to week, so one bad photo online tells you very little about the day you will actually be here. Book around it, not away from it

The short version: seaweed on the sand is real, and the cleanup is real, but it is not a reason to give up on the water.
